Touch of creole
stealing hearts one bite at a time

Who we are
Touch of Creole was started by Beulah and Ray Sampson. A husband and wife team whose love for cooking has made their home a place of many and extended family members to visit and recharge in the bosom of the Sampson hospitality. The couple communicate through the rich Malay traditions Beulah carries with her from her family home and Ray's global influence from extensive travels. Beulah's finely crafted knowledge of Malay spices brought to beautifully fragrant experiences compliments Ray's food experiences from the street food culture of the Americas to the unassuming flavour tapestry of Persia

South Africa doesn't really have a national dish and Cape Town may have many but not one which signals Cape Town. Not the equivalent of pizza to Italy or what Tacos are to Mexico. But because it has such a diverse nation, many cultures have their on signature dishes. Food vendors have adopted the best of these and foodies are spoilt for choice.

TOUCH OF CREOLE ORIGINS
The origin of the story cannot be told without the history of pain and oppression. However it also cannot be told without the recognition of triumph and resilience. Cape Town South Africa is the first city to be established at the tip of Africa. The decedents come from first nation peoples indigenous to the Cape as well as slaves from Indonesia, the former Malaya or what was know as Dutch East India. The people from these South East Asian islands came to the Cape as slaves and the rich flavours, language and traditions were brought with them. The fact that the Cape is a port city saw the arrival of many foreigners from South America, Europe and other Asian countries and the influence of their diaspora can be seen and felt in the city daily.
We chose to use the term Creole because it describes our rich mixed history. It is a history shared by South Africans who present as European also because we share such a deeply mixed history. Touch of Creole is guided by the ethos that we are more alike than different.
It definitely is a name that encourages conversation with our customers. We have made such meaningful connections with people who want to know more about our journey with food and come with an open mind. Although the term Creole is used to describe Haitians or descendants from the slave trade residing in Mississippi, what is actually meant is mixed. Locally the history of the Bas

HALAAL CERTIFICATION STATEMENT
We value the feedback we receive from our customers and one question that comes up often is, “Are you halaal”? We must state that we do not have halaal certification and of course we have investigated the matter but for a small business like ours, it is just impossible to manage the annual cost. We respect the purpose of the certification boards and hope to acquire the certification in the future.
We do however procure all our products from halaal certified suppliers. For example all our protein products are procured from Excellent meat maket or Elite meat market. We have passed all hygiene enquiries and we do not cook with pork or any fermented liquids.
We take great pride in the standard and the quality of our dishes and pledge to always take the greatest care to respect the wishes and practices of our customers.
